We move on to Benaian today, another of David’s mighty men who slew two lionlike men and then a lion in a pit on a snowy day. Those men must have been very fierce because of the way they are described and that would go along with what we have seen others do in this chapter. But what of jumping down into a pit with a lion with snow on the ground? Why not just leave the lion there as it must not have been able to climb out? Why not kill the lion with a bow or a spear?
Why not wait for the snow to melt and there would be better footing? Those are all legitimate questions? But Benanian never asked those question as there was something that needed to be done and he just did it. It was not important to that man that he understood everything, just important what the king needed and wanted done and so it was. It is not important that we understand all that the Bible tells us to do, just that we do it. (Prov 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.) Very often understanding comes as we obey His Word. (Ps 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.) One is seen as mighty in the Lord when they are willing to obey His Word.
