12 But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the Lord wrought a great victory.

Here we find another of David’s mighty men engaged in battle, standing his ground, defending what was the kings and gaining a victory. I have often wondered why it was important to fight for a field of lentils when they seem so unimportant? The field was important to Shammah because it was important to David and that mighty man was not going to give any ground to the enemy. I liken that act to today when so many are trying to say that Bible doctrine does not matter, that we need to bridge the gap between religions and just get all together. If every Word of God is pure, and it is, then everything in the Word of God is important and that includes Bible doctrine. Is the doctrine of the shed blood important? Is the doctrine of the virgin birth of Christ important? Is the doctrine of eternal life and eternal condemnation important? All Bible doctrine is important and needs to be defended no matter what those who have fallen into compromise may claim. That man was noted because he defended a field of beans or vegetables, how much more will those who stand for Bible doctrine be noted by our Lord and King?
