“A Trusted Mother” Matt 15:22-28
Introduction
I want to speak to you this morning about a trusted mother that we find in the Bible. There are mothers who are identified by name in the Bible such as Eve, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, Eunice and others who are great examples for us to look at on a Mother’s Day, great women of God, women of faith, women who are pointed out by name for good reason.
I. And then there are mothers who are just as great as an example who are not named: In Matt 15 we find such just such an one, not named, but one we can learn much from. – Matt 15:22-28 – I did bring a message on this text a few years ago but this is a completely different message. Amazing how one can study the Bible and the Holy Spirit give more and more from a familiar text.
A. While we don’t know the name of this woman, of this mother, there are several things we can glean from the text:
1. She was not Jewish: Matt 15:21-22 The Bible tells us here she was a woman of Canaan. In the account recorded in mark the Bible tells us she was a Greek, a Syrophenician woman. She was not Jewish.
2. She had a great need, a daughter who was demon possessed: Matt 15:22 This demon would destroy her daughter.
3. She had to overcome a lot of things to get to see Jesus: Matt 15:23-24 There is a lot to see in these two verses.
a. Again, in Mark we are told she was a Greek. The Greeks were the educated people, the thinking people and that she had to overcome. Surely the world and educated people would have the answer to her problem. She should stick with them.
b. She had to overcome the disciples who wanted Jesus to send her away. – Matt 15:23 – She was not worthy to be helped.
c. She had to overcome her own thoughts. – Matt 15:24 – Jesus did not say that to her because He did not want to help her, to meet her need. Jesus said that to her because of what she naturally thought about the Jews. Remember in John 4 Jesus went into Samaria to meet the needs of one who was not of Israel. That woman would naturally want nothing to do with Jesus.
4. Jesus is going to meet her need and cast the demon out of her daughter: Matt 15:28
5. We are not told her name but we do know several things about her:
B. But what stand out about this woman and mother is what Jesus said about her and what Jesus gave her: Matt 15:28
1. This woman receives what is perhaps the greatest testament that could be received from our Lord: Matt 15:28 “O woman, great is thy faith”. – Matt 15:28 – What a testimony to have and it is Jesus that said that about her. What a testimony given her by Jesus.
2. She receives a black check as far as a prayer request: Matt 15:28 “Be it unto thee even as thou wilt”. Whatever she would ask at that time it would be granted her. She could have asked for anything and there are very few in the Bible that is said of.
a. God said He would give to Solomon whatever he asked in 1 Kings 3 when He could trust Solomon.
b. Jesus said the same to this woman and mother.
II. I want to look this morning at this trusted mother and what brought her to the point that Jesus could say this: Matt 15:28
Body
I. She was one with a need the world could not solve: Matt 15:22 Her daughter, we are not told how old, was being destroyed, grievously vexed by a demon. That word grievously means to be made miserable sick, it is used of any with diseases that are incurable, such as one who was a leper. To be vexed is to be possessed and to be destroyed from with. This woman has a problem.
A. Most likely she had tried every possible means to rid her daughter of this demon, of this horrible problem: But there was no help.
1. That region had its own religion, had its own idols: Most likely they were prayed to and the false priests asked to help. But there was no help coming from the idols or the priests that represented them.
2. Probably would have tried the physicians that they had at that time: Surely she would have tried that.
3. Perhaps she tried to hold or bind her daughter when the demon was at its worse: They did that with legion.
4. With all her efforts came no results: Matt 15:22
B. The young people of America are being destroyed today by the same demonic force that was destroying that girl: We do see generations being lost today and they are under attack, are being destroyed by the same demonic force we see in Matthew 15. To say that America is a Christian nation today is so far from the truth it is unimaginable.
1. The youth of today are being taught that they don’t know what gender they are: In several states the doctor no longer states the gender of the new born, the parents decide later if the baby is a girl or boy. That is demonic.
2. Every perverted lifestyle is taught as the norm and the norm as depraved: That is demonic.
3. The sexual abuse of children has risen to alarming levels everywhere: That is demonic.
4. Abortion is demonic:

5. The world cannot solve any of these problems: Advances in science and education are only making them worse. The young people of America are being destroyed by the same demonic force that was destroying that young girl. – Matt 15:22 – The world does not have the answer to the problems our young people are facing today.
C. She was one with a need the world could not solve: Matt 15:22
II. She went to the one and only one who could solve the problem despite what others thought or said: Matt 15:22-24 There was no one telling this woman to go to Jesus, in fact they were telling her to stay away, that Jesus could be no help to her.
A. Notice what she had to get past to get to Jesus: Matt 15:22-24
1. The Bible tells us in Mark that Jesus was not easy to find: Mark 7:24 Jesus was in the house but the others that were there did not want it to be made known. The reason being what took place when people knew Jesus was in a house. They wanted to keep it quiet.
2. The disciples of Jesus tried to keep her away: Matt 15:23
3. The world she lived in told her she should nothing to do with Jesus: Matt 15:24 Jesus said this because of her, because of what she was and believed, Jesus was open to any and all who wanted to meet with Him. Remember the woman of Samaria.
4. She had to get past much to get to Jesus:
B. The world today, society today, tells us the young people need everything except Jesus: Consider what you see today and what children need more than anything else today.
1. The world tells you to get your young people involved in everything so they will be well rounded: Get them into sports, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading, this group, that group, this organization, that organization, take them here, take them there.
2. The same voices tell you there are no absolutes in religion so don’t force that on them: Traveling teams but no church house.
3. Even people in church at times sound like those disciples: People are so busy, God understands.
4. And stay away from that doctrinal standard, too hard to understand doctrine: Jesus stood on doctrine.
C. It will be that you have to get through a lot today to bring your children to Jesus: I would pray that you fight through whatever it is that tries to keep your children from Jesus. Jesus is the only one that can solve the problem.
III. She was willing to accept what Jesus would give her: Matt 15:25-27 Even if it be crumbs falling from the table she was willing to accept what Jesus would give to her. – Matt 15:27
A. Many today come demanding of Jesus and demanding what Jesus never promised to give: She would receive what Jesus would give and be satisfied with His will for her and her daughter.
1. I have heard people say that they tired Jesus but still have troubles in their lives: Jesus never promised a troubled free life.
2. People have told me they tried Jesus and still have worries about the future: Jesus promised peace and grace for the day.
3. People have told me they prayed and Jesus didn’t answer the way they wanted: Prayer is answered according to His will, not ours.
4. Many today come demanding of Jesus and then are unthankful for what they receive:
B. We are to be satisfied with what we receive from the Lord Jesus Christ: But many are like Israel coming out of Egypt.
1. They complained about manna which is called angel’s food: God was feeding them.
2. They complained about the Promised Land: There was giants in the land but God promised to defeat them.
3. They complained about the leadership: Delivered from Pharaoh they complained about Godly leadership.
4. They complained about the wanderings: But they chose not to go into the Promised Land.
5. They were satisfied with nothing, complained about everything:
C. Are you satisfied with what God has given you today? God has given you something today, are you satisfied? – Lam 3:21-24
D. She was willing to accept what Jesus would give her: Matt 15:27
IV. When given a blank check her request was for her daughter: Matt 15:28 Whatever she requested was going to be granted.
Matt 15:28 The original request was for her daughter but now that it would be anything would the request change? No.
A. Not everyone can be trusted with such a request, whatever you want: Who can be trusted with such a request?
1. Only one walking in fellowship with Christ: 1 Jn 1:7 She was.
-3-
2. Only one with proper desires: Col 3:2 Her affections in the right place.
3. One who believes all things are possible with Christ: Luke 17:6 She believed.
4. One who wants His glory above all: 1 Cor 10:31 That was her desire.
B. Could God trust you with such a request?
V. Now the greatest words she could ever hear: Matt 15:28 And that is what the young people need today, mothers of faith.
A. Believe me that faith will be tested: Satan leaves no one alone.
1. The same demonic forces found in Matthew 15 are active today seeking whom they may destroy: 1 Peter 5:8
2. That same one would destroy your children and grandchildren:
3. Your faith is going to be tested today:
B. People will tell you that your children need as much of everything they can get, except Jesus:
C. Jesus is still the answer and still the one they need:
D. Do you have a desire to hear these words one day? Matt 15:28
Conclusion
