36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

Yesterday was what many have come to call “Passion week” with the days leading up to the cross. Jesus was praised as He entered Jerusalem that day in fulfillment of Scripture. What a day that must have been and it was not just the multitude of disciples praising the King of kings and Lord of lords, the entire city of Jerusalem cried out in praise for Jesus as well. (Matt 21:10-11
And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.) Why then did Jesus weep over that city, why did Jesus weep that day? Those were not tears of joy, they were tears of sorrow, tears from a broken heart. Why did Jesus weep that day? Because Jesus knew that many of those ones praising Him that day would be calling for His death just a few days later, because the same ones that called Him King would call for a murderer to be released in his stead, because Jesus knew that even the multitude of disciples who praised Him would leave Him to die alone. Jesus wept over unbelief and what that would mean for those who refused to come to Him, to meet Him at the cross and have sins forgiven. Jesus wept over the fear that would overcome His disciples and cause one to deny Him three times and others to forsake Him. Jesus had good reason to weep that day. I wonder today how many times I give Jesus reason to weep over me? Yes I am saved and those would be tears of joy but what of the times I could stand up for Jesus, what of the times I could say a word for Jesus, what of the times I could be found praising Jesus and I keep silent? How many times do I give Jesus a reason to weep over me?
