Ps 40:1-5 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Most see the life of David as one blessed by God and filled with all the good things of life. Both are true but there were many hard trials in the life of David as well. In this Psalm where David is pouring his heart out to God in thanksgiving we find it is because the Lord lifted him out of a horrible pit and miry clay. (Verse 2) The Hebrew word for horrible points to sure destruction. Miry clay is a substance that has a hold on the feet of one and they cannot stand or get out and they will be overcome. David many times was it circumstances just like that as we all are from time to time. Some sorrow has a hold upon us, some trouble so horrible that it seems we will be destroyed. What to do at those times? Verses four and five above have the answer for those times in our lives. Trust in the goodness and works of God. Remember what our God has done for us in the past and will do for us again. Go back to verse one and wait on the Lord and when we tire of waiting we need to wait some more. Wait patiently on the Lord for He does hear our cry and His will set out feet upon that solid rock once again. Wait on the Lord.
