Ps 42:5-8 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
KJV
“Deep calleth unto deep”. I think of looking into a deep body of water and not being able to see the bottom no matter how clear it might be. I understand when water is muddy not being able to see the bottom. One knows the water will eventually clear. But when it is clear and one cannot see the bottom this reminds me of looking into troubles that seem to have no end, one after another. As one looks down into that deep it eventually turns to a darkness that one cannot see through, “Deep calleth into deep”. What then is the answer? Once more look to your loving Savior, look to the God of your salvation. Notice the latter part of verse eight and the heart of the Psalmist. “In the night His song shall be with me”. Here we find that even as the deep waters of trials surround us our God can give a song of joy in the night. How? The Psalmist has called out in prayer. He has not turned away from the one who can help him, not become bitter, he has called out in prayer. Does the deep seem to surround you today? It is time to pray more, not less.
