Kings 2:9-14 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Another lesson from Elisha this morning. That great man of God, like each of us today, was not perfect. We find here a prayer was going to be answered. (Verse 9) This is not a wish, it is a prayer that God and God alone could answer and it was a great request. (Verse 10) Elisha had this prayer answered in his life in that through him God preformed exactly double the miracles God preformed though Elijah. Elisha received the double portion, his prayer was answered. But what if Elisha had asked for more? What if God wanted to give that man even more? Not that we should ask for things outside the will of God, or that we should ask for things to just get more and more from God, but why limit the God of heaven? Why didn’t the prophet ask for all that God was willing to give in service to Him? Why limit the God of heaven? Why do we limit God today in our prayer lives? We are not to be unthankful for what God has already done, or be self indulgent in prayer, but why limit God? The Bible clearly says that “Ye ask, and receive not,” How many things does God have for us and is just waiting for us to ask? Prayer is the most powerful thing in this world and our God desires to answer our prayers but we do need to ask. Don’t ask for things we know God does not want us to have or things that cannot be used for His honor and glory, but ask for all that God wants us to have. Elisha asked and the prayer was answered, but why not ask for all that God is willing to give?
