John 16:31-33 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
KJV
Be of good cheer. It seems that more people are in need of hearing those words today than at any other time I can remember. Be of good cheer. How can we be of good cheer with so many things happening in our nation that continue this turn away from all that God calls good? How can we be of good cheer when we see so many who are sick with illnesses? How can we be of good cheer when we see so many who are sick with heartache? How can we be of good cheer when so many are dealing with loss? How can we be of good cheer today? Jesus did not give this command when all things were well. Jesus gave this just before He was arrested, falsely accused, unjustly tried, and crucified on the cross. How can we be of good cheer? That phrase means to be comforted. Comforted by the truth that God is in complete control of all that takes place in our lives. Comforted by the truth that God does all things well. Comforted by the truth that all things do work together for our good and God’s glory. That phrase, be of good cheer, is recorded seven times in the Bible and we will look at those this coming week beginning tomorrow. For today, take great comfort and be of good cheer because even in the darkest hour Jesus gave that simple command. Be of good cheer.
