Luke 22:31-33 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
KJV
This is the only time the word sift is found in the New Testament and it points to the desire of Satan to destroy any and all that are of God. This is a very critical time in Peter’s life and a time Peter should have known that he could not depend upon himself to carry him through as his answer to Jesus would indicate. What Peter needed was to remember what the wisest man in the world had to say many years before. (Eccl 4:12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.) And this is the only time the word threefold is found. What makes up the threefold cord we need to defeat the devil in our lives today? That first cord is Jesus. We need a relationship with Jesus Christ through the new birth. Have you been born again? If not the battle is already lost and to get on the winning side you need to be saved. But there needs to be a deeper relationship with Jesus, one that goes beyond salvation. Peter knew of that relation and was walking with Jesus. Peter was a part of the inner circle, Peter was given the keys to the gospel message, Peter was close to Jesus Christ. But dear friend Peter needed to be closer still. Jesus Christ is the first part of that threefold cord in our battle with the devil and we need to be close to Him. But how close are you to Jesus today? Is Jesus the first one you talked to this day? Is Jesus the first one you spent time with today? Will you frame your day around what pleases Jesus? Or will you like Peter depend upon self to get through this day and the trials that await you? Trials that Jesus knows all about and trials Jesus can carry you through. Satan stands before every born again child of God today and the desire is to sift each one like wheat. Who will you depend upon today?
