This is the last use of the term eternal life in the Bible. This chapter also contains the last use of the word everlasting in the Bible. (Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.) It is the same Greek word translated eternal and everlasting in the Bible. There is a contrast here, eternal life and everlasting judgment. What we do with Jesus Christ determines which applies to us for all eternity. We will focus for a few days on eternal life before we move on to everlasting judgment. Man is an everlasting being, we will always and forever exist because we have been made in the image of God. (Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.) We do not look like God, we do not sound like God, we do not have Divine attributes, we do have a beginning, so how are we like God? We will have an everlasting existence. When we leave this world we do not cease to exist, we will have an everlasting existence. Where will that existence be spent? Will it be in eternal life or in everlasting judgment? What we do with Jesus Christ determines the answer to that question. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Jesus also said “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Everlasting and eternal are the same word. One needs Jesus Christ to have eternal life and escape everlasting judgment. Do you have Jesus today? Are you born again today? Have you repented from sin and turned to Jesus and Jesus alone for forgiveness of your sin and salvation through His shed blood? If no that is the first thing you must do. All that we will say about eternal life in this devotional tomorrow makes no difference if you do not know Jesus as your personal savior today. We all are sinners and we all need Jesus Christ. Are you born again? If not take the time today to read John chapter three, Romans chapters five and ten and turn to Jesus Christ and ask Him to save you. Nothing else in this life matters until you are born again.
