14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

I find it revealing that in Psalm 38 David would liken himself to a deaf man and in Psalm 39 to a man who was dumb and could not speak. There are times when we hear many different voices giving advice, telling us what to do and even at times voices that lie about us a try to destroy us as was the case with David in Psalm 38. What to do? Turn a deaf ear to all those who are not giving sound spiritual advice and listen only to God. Turn a deaf ear to false accusations and let God take care of the matter. Then there are times we may be tempted to murmur and complain, to speak rashly to God in prayer or to others and that is when we need be quiet. David learned some very valuable lessons in his life and some of them the hard way. There are times when we need to sit and listen to God and only to God. False accusation may be made, some thinking they are helping may give advice, but listen to God and only to God. There are times when we need to quiet all the other voices and listen to God. There are also times when we need to be quiet. Our words spoken rashly or in complaint will often only add to any trouble we face. But could it be that when we are silent God will speak for us in a way and with wisdom that goes beyond us? There are times when it is best to quiet all the others voices and there are times when it is best we say nothing and just listen. We need pray for wisdom to see when those times are.
