2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
KJV
There are some very hard questions asked in the book of Job and the hardest come from God and are directed at Job himself. Without doubt Job did not understand all that he was going through or why. His friends were of no comfort to him, his wife was going through the very same things and she had no answer. What was God doing and why? Read the entire book and you find Job asking those questions. Why? Why? Why? So God directs a question to Job. (Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.) Truth be told we do not have the understanding, we do not know the mind of God and we do not know the end from the beginning. But God does. God will continue to ask Job this question. (Job 38:18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.; Job 38:22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ; Job 38:36
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?) What God wants Job to know is that God is on the throne, God is in heaven, God is in control, not Job. There are many hard trials that we must endure in this world. Being a Christian does not shield us from the storms of life and when many of those storms arise questions also arise in our minds. Many times we may also ask God why. It is at those times we need to read the questions God asked of Job and know that our God is still on the throne and our God is still in control.
