Luke 11:1-4 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
KJV
The phrase and petition to “Teach us” in not a common one found in the Bible as it appears only seven times. Above the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. They were undoubtably men of prayer at that time but they must have seen in Jesus one deeper in prayer and one that had every prayer answered in the way that He asked. What opened those floodgates of prayer? It begins with a relationship, “Our Father”. But it is more than just knowing the Father through His Son which we must do. We must be born again and have that spiritual relationship with both the Son and the Father to have prayers answered. But this goes beyond just having that relationship. All of us have earthly fathers, but not all are close to their earthly father. That relationship is there by blood, but there is no closeness. Are you close to your heavenly Father? How much time did you spend with Him yesterday? Did you take time to talk to Him in prayer? Did you take time to allow Him to talk to you through His Word? Did you consult Him on decisions you made and ask for His directions? Were you careful not to make Him ashamed of any of your actions? Did you point Him out to anyone? Answered prayer begins with a relationship. What is your relationship really like with your Father?
