1 Cor 10:12-13 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
KJV
The words take heed in our reading this morning provide for us a warning. In context the chapter is speaking about Israel and how Satan by various means moved them away from the Lord and caused a fall that kept them ultimately from the Promised Land for forty yeas. The reason we are given that warning follows in verse thirteen, the temptations that come upon us in this life, the things that Satan will throw at the believer in Christ in order to move him or her away from the Lord. These can be the natural things of life like illness and other problems that we will encounter that are simply a part of life. They also can be other things that Satan will use to discourage us in our walk with the Lord, trials, persecutions and the like. Why the warning? Because it can be easy to think one has the strength to stand on their own when the temptations come, that we can be so spiritual as to stand on our own two feet so to speak. God wants us to know that none of us are able to do that and when that thinking comes into our minds we are more than likely to fall and fall hard. I wonder if Moses thought that just before he struck the rock instead of speaking to it? That Moses had done that in the power of the Lord before so now he could do the same thing on his own. I wonder if David thought he could stand against temptation alone? I wonder of Peter thought that when he warmed himself by the fire just before denying Jesus? And I wonder how many times that creeps into my mind, that I can stand on my own? Here we are reminded just how much we need Jesus, just how much we need the Lord. Take heed dear friend, we cannot stand on our own. Tomorrow our way of escape.
