The word weary is found three times in the New Testament. It means to become discouraged, tired, to despair, to lose heart. It comes up this morning because of the many people who seem to be weary today. Weary because of health problems, weary because they have lost loved ones, weary because of work problems, financial problems, family problems, weary because of a number of things. People are weary today. What does the Bible say about being weary? How do we combat this weariness? The first time the word weary is used in the New Testament gives us a hint on how to fight it. ( Luke 18:1-5 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. ) Prayer. When weary, pray. When weariness continues, pray. I never hear an audible voice speaking back to me but I know when I pray my God hears. My Jesus hears my prayers. The point of the parable is NOT that we will weary our Lord with our prayers but that “Men ought always to pray”. When weary, pray. Pray and then allow the Lord to speak to your heart. Pray and allow the Lord to comfort you. Pray and allow the Lord to encourage you. Talk to the Lord, pray. I do not hear an audible voice answering me, but I do hear the Lord speaking to me as I pray and as I wait upon Him. Many people cease praying when they get weary and all the time they need to be praying without ceasing. The first step in combating weariness is prayer. More tomorrow.
