James 4:1-3 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
KJV
The word “Amiss” is found only four times in the Bible. (Verse three.) Each time it is used it speaks of an action against God. In 2 Chron chapter six is speaks of sins against God. In Daniel chapter three a command is given that none speak against God. In Luke chapter twenty three it is said of Jesus that He did nothing amiss against God. And in our text concerning prayer we see that we can ask in a way that is amiss. How can we be against God in prayer? Let us examine the text and we can see a few ways we can ask amiss, or ask against God. First, when we ask lusting for things we don’t have or need just because others may have them. We are to be content with such things as we have. That does not mean I cannot ask for things I do not have but that I need to examine my motives in prayer. If it is something I am simply lusting after because some others have it then it will not be used for God’s glory. Second, is my heart in a right relationship with God and others? How can I ask things of my heavenly Father if I am not in a right relationship with Him? Not, am I saved, but am I living in a way that pleases God? If I am then I am also going to have right relationships with my brothers and sisters in Christ and there will be no fightings and wars. Third, am I asking within the will of God and for God’s will? Can I honestly pray “If it be thy will” in the things I am asking? All that is not the will of God is certainly amiss, so can I honestly say that the things I am praying for are within the will of God and not against God’s revealed will? When prayers seem not to be answered we need be sure we are not praying amiss.
