Jonah 1:1-3 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
KJV
How foolish of Jonah to think he could ignore the clear command of God, to run from God. Where was Jonah going to go that God would not know, that God could not find him? Even Jonah in that state of disobedience had to have known that he could not hide from God. How foolish of Jonah. Yet we do the very same thing today when we ignore the clear commands of the Word of God. I am to be a man of prayer. Am I? I am to be a student of the Word of God. Am I? I am to be a witness to the lost. Am I? I am to let the light of Christ shine out in my life. Do I? I am to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Am I? I am to forgive as Christ forgave. Do I? What happens when we decide that we do not have to obey the clear command of Scripture? We may not get into a ship and try to run far away from God as Jonah did but we are still doing the very same thing. When we neglect prayer, when we neglect the Bible, when we do not witness, when we place our light under a bushel, when we do not forgive and a host of other things we did not name we are in the same state of disobedience as Jonah. We may not hide in a ship but we hide in our homes, we hide in our jobs, we hide in our hobbies and we disobey God. What if Jonah had just obeyed? Would he have been better off, would he have been blessed, would he have been filled with the joy of the Lord? I believe the answer to those questions to be yes. So why not just obey God today and stop running from God?
