July 26th, 2021 by Pastor Solley2 Peter 1:1-9 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
KJV
In the Bible there can be found a list of things, and not just one list, that can be added to our faith. One such list we find in our Bible reading this morning beginning in verse five. Study this list and you will find that we do need all of these things to live a victorious Christian life, the type of life that Christ wants us to live, the type of life that will glorify our savior. However there is also something named that can keep us from living this type of life, from adding to our faith that which the Lord wants us to add. Notice verse four above and the last word in verse four, lust. Lust is wanting the things that I want and not the things that God wants me to have. Lust is me wanting to do things my way and not God’s way. Lust is me telling God what is best and not asking God to show me what is best. Lust is putting my will above the will of God. Many believers stop short of what God wants us to add to our faith because we place our will above the will of God, because we lust after what we want and the way we want. Notice as well in verse four that this is something we must escape. When one needs to escape it is only because they have been shut up, imprisoned. In this case it is by the thinking of the world and our flesh. Don’t think is a strange thing when this type of thinking begins to take hold of you as the above portion is written to Christians. Satan will always try to trip us up in order to keep us from becoming what Christ wants us to be. When I begin to become frustrated with things, all of us do from time to time, I need to stop and make sure that I am not lusting after my own way but after what God wants from and for me. Then I can once more begin to add to faith.
