This is one of the three places the phrase be strong is found in the New Testament and here we are commanded to be strong in the Lord because of the battle we are in. I am reminded almost daily how our physical strength decreases with the passing years. It is a fact of life that we must learn to accept. But what of our spiritual strength? Does it decrease as one gets older, is that another fact of life? Let me take you back to a verse in the Old Testament. (Josh 14:11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.) Caleb spoke these words to Joshua as Israel entered the Promised Land and if my math is correct he was at least 80 years old at that time. He refers back to a time he was 40 years old. Is an 80 year man as strong as a 40 year old man? Hardly, but that is what the Bible says of Caleb. How is this possible? Caleb I believe is speaking of a spiritual strength and while he grew older that strength grew greater. Spiritually we can and we need to be strong in the Lord and much the more as we grow older. I remember watching nature shows and the animals that ran in a pack always seemed to attack the young and the weak and the old and the weak. As we grow older in the Lord we need grow stronger in the Lord because the enemy is not going to leave us alone.
