John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
KJV
Without doubt, after listening to the preaching of John the Baptist, the people knew why John called Jesus the Lamb of God. They would go back in their minds to the Passover Lamb. Something that took place all those years ago had been rehearsed yearly in their minds. How an innocent lamb had been slain, the blood applied to the door post and top of the door and their ancestors had been delivered from the death angel and bondage. Now standing before them was the Lamb of God. That Passover lamb had to be perfect, no blemish at all, or that blood would not have been sufficient. Now the Lamb of God would have to be perfect as well, no blemish, no fault, no sin found in Him at all. Jesus Christ was and is that perfect Lamb. He was tried for thirty three years and found perfect, Jesus never sinned. (2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.) Jesus is the only one born of a woman that kept the Law of Moses. (Matt 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.) The Father said of Jesus that He was well pleased. Jesus was sinless. Jesus was proclaimed sinless by government.
(John 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.) The Father in heaven could see no sin in Jesus, the Law of Moses could point out no sin in Jesus, even man could find no fault in Him. Jesus is the Lamb of God, the perfect Lamb. Why is that so important? Because only a sinless sacrifice can take away sin. Try as we might to appease God, to cover our sin, to take away our sin we never can and for good reason. We were born in sin and practice sin. But not Jesus. Jesus was born sinless because He has no earthly father, and Jesus remained sinless. He is the Lamb of God.
