Matt 26:38-39 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
KJV
Here we find Jesus exceeding sorrowful even to the point of death the Bible tells us. What did Jesus do at such a time? Jesus did what we all can do, Jesus prayed. Jesus fell in submission to the Father and Jesus worshiped the Father. Jesus had a close relationship with his Father. We need do the same things as the trials of life beset us. Submission, worship, to the one we know and have a close relationship with. Now notice the next few words, “If it be possible”. Do not mistake those words for a question or even an accusation. Jesus knows that all things are possible with the Father and the Father can do all things. Jesus knew and knows the Father does all things well. Jesus is not praying with an if God can do it attitude, Jesus knew the Father can do all things. One area that we as Christians often have a problem with is doubt. Many times when we pray the if is in our minds that God might not be able to deliver us, to take care of us, to change the circumstances of life. That is not true my friend, God can do anything. We need to pray with that assurance, that our God can do anything. Neither was it an accusation on Jesus part asking God why don’t you do it? We often take that attitude as well, if God really loved us He would do what we want, what we demand of Him. Remember the fist part of Jesus in prayer in the garden is submission and worship. Are we will to submit to the will of God? Are we willing to continue to worship and praise our God even in difficult times? Jesus was.
