Matt 26:38-39 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
KJV
We have been looking at the answer to such sorrow as one seems to be in that they are about to die. The very sorrow that Jesus felt just before the cross. Jesus could have done any number of things at that time but what Jesus did was pray. Jesus did what we all can do, pray. Yesterday we saw Jesus in submission and worship as He prayed. This morning we take note of who Jesus was praying to, one He has a close relationship with, “O my Father”. Jesus had a very close relationship with the Father. One might think this because Jesus is God, but there is more to it than that. We can have the same closeness with the Father through Jesus Christ, we can be just as close with our heavenly Father. But most Christians are not and not because they can’t be. It is because they spend little time with the Father until a crisis comes up in their lives and as a result do not really know the Father. Yes, they know Him in salvation but that is all. How much time do you spend with the Father each day? Do you know Him, really know Him. Study Jesus through the gospels and you will find Him spending much time with the Father. You will find Jesus a great while before the day begins spending time with His Father. You will find Jesus apart and alone spending time with His Father. How much time do you spend with the Father? No wonder then that when Jesus was exceeding sorrowful He went to the Father. Friend, if you don’t spend time with your heavenly Father each day then begin today, begin to get to know Him, cry out to Him, spend time with Him. Then at such times as you are exceeding sorrowful you will have one to turn to as well. Just like Jesus.
