Heb 12:1-3 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
KJV
There are many who are wearied today and many a Christian as well. Many fit what we see in the last few words of verse three above. I talked yesterday to an elderly Christian man who is in his nineties and he is weary with this life and ready to meet his savior. I talked to one in a car accident in which he suffered many broken bones and can’t get out of his house and he is weary. I talked to an elderly Christian woman who is waiting for a biopsy to determine if she has cancer and she is weary. I talked to another dear Christian woman who has battled cancer for many years and now fears it is back and she is weary. I talked to another who is in constant pain and they told me through tears that they are weary, weary with life. There are many who are weary today. Did you know that the phrase “Joy was set before” is found only one place in the Bible? That place is in our reading this morning and is said of the Lord Jesus Christ. Pay careful attention to the context in which it is used in verse two. Praise God that Jesus endured, that Jesus did not get weary with the path He was to follow, that Jesus did not get weary with man, with rejection, that Jesus did not get weary with life. Jesus endured through what we would say would cause much weariness. There are many things in this life that cause one to grow weary but we dear brother and sister can endure by the power, mercy and grace of Almighty God because there is a joy set before us as well.
