25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
KJV
The work of salvation is always all of God and all of grace. The altar that was put up was to be made without man lifting up any tool. Yes, man had a part just like we need to come to Christ today. But that altar was all then provided and placed in order by God, no tool of man was to be used. There is no work that one can do that will take care of the sin problem, no work that can make one justified before God. That work was done, is done by Jesus Christ alone. When we lift up tool in salvation we make it all of works and we find in the Bible that works cannot save.
