And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.

It has always been interesting to me that the promise of victory that Gideon took to heart came after the number in his army was reduced. That promise was given for the first time in chapter six. (Judg 6:14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?) In chapter six Gideon asks God for conformation three times and God grants his request. But now with his army reduced Gideon acts in faith and obeys God. Why? Gideon has already learned the lessons of obedience and while obedience is not always easy it is key to faith. How can one move in faith unless one is willing to obey God. The army reduced, the fearful and those not watchful sent home, God can now promise victory to Gideon and Gideon will obey. Does it seem at times the promises of God beyond you? That His promise of peace, joy, rest, answered prayer is beyond you? Then check and see if obedience is beyond you as well. My obedience I can control and when I obey I find the promises that I cannot control coming to pass. When Gideon obeyed a promise of victory was given.
