6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
KJV
Why do bad things happen to good people, why do the righteous suffer? Those are questions that are often asked and the answer, at least part of the answer to those questions is found in our reading this morning. Often we are able to be a comfort to someone when we have gone through what they are going through. I try not to tell people I know how they feel unless I have traveled down that road myself. I have visited in the homes of people dying of cancer, prayed with them, tried to comfort the family. It was only after I watched my mother battle and die of cancer that I could tell them “I know how you feel.” After I sat in a doctor’s office and heard those same words “You have cancer” then I could tell someone that I knew what and how they were feeling. Suffering is never something we want, never something we ask to have, never something we want to keep, but it is something that can be used for the glory of God.
