1 Sam 10:21-22 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22 Therefore they inquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
KJV
Saul, the first king in Israel, was found hiding when it was time to anoint him as king. Why? Many point to the humble beginnings of Saul and this certainly applies. Saul had a very good beginning and no trouble in his kingdom or personal life until pride began to enter in. If only Saul had remained humble he might have had a much better ending to his reign and life. I also see Saul turning away from responsibility here. Saul knew God had chosen him to be king, knew what God wanted him to do, yet went and hid when it was time. This trait will also come to harm Saul later on when directed by Samuel to destroy completely and enemy. Saul at that time saved the best for a spoil and that against the command of God. We not only need to be humble and remain humble before God if we are going to please Him, we also need to stand up to our responsibilities. God directs us to live in a certain way in His Word, to do certain things according to His Word, and we are responsibly to obey.
