2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

God told Israel that He was going to give them all that He had promised going all the way back to Abraham with the only catch being that He would not go with them. Instead of being filled with joy they began to mourn. Why? What is so important about the presence of God if they were going to get all that God had promised? In the Bible we find that the presence of God was their guide, was their safety, was their security, was their joy and many more things as well. What good were the promises if God was not in them? They would be in the Promised Land, the enemies would be defeated and driven out, but what then? Then they would be without the Lord. They realized that to be with God, to be in His presence would be better than all the promises in the Bible. When we get to the point in our lives that we realize it is better to be in the presence of God then and only then will we find true peace and joy, only then will we find contentment in this world. Too bad Israel didn’t stay where they are found in Exodus 33.
