2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
KJV
This is the only place the English word contend is found in the New Testament. It speaks of facing opposition, of fighting for something. Here we find that we as believers in Christ are to contend for the faith. The meaning being that there are many who will present a false doctrine, false religions, things contrary to the truth. We will face things on a daily basis that we must contend with and contend for. Witness to someone today and you may be confronted with another way of salvation. Invite someone to join in you church and you may be confronted with another theology. Turn on the TV and you will be confronted with immoral images. We will have to contend for the faith today. My question is, how will we do in the battle? I was a boxing fan in my youth and would always pay attention to the contenders for the title. Those would be the ones worthy of the fight. Are you a contender today?
