Luke 17:12-18 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
KJV
Where are the nine? Having to ask this question must have broken the heart of Jesus. There was no cure, is no cure for leprosy, those men were outcasts, separated from society, it was a terrible life they would live until the disease ate away their bodies. Their only hope in this world was Jesus and they called out to Him. Yet, when healed, only one turned to give thanks. It is a picture of how self consumed and unthankful people can be. Did they think they deserved to be healed, that Jesus owed them something, that Jesus was obligated to heal them, that there was no need to give thanks? Perhaps all of the above and that is what we see in people today. They did not deserve to be healed, Jesus did not owe them anything and Jesus was not obligated to heal them. When we have the attitude of the nine we will not be anymore thankful than they were. Whatever you have today you have only by the mercy and grace of God, be thankful. Thankful for life itself, thankful for eternal life, thankful for God’s provision, for God’s protection, for salvation in Christ. Be the one who gave thanks, not the nine who remained self consumed.
