2 Tim 2:1-4 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
KJV
With Veteran’s Day coming I thought I would look at a soldier in the Bible this week. Here we find the believer in Christ called a soldier in verses 3 & 4 of our reading. What or who is a soldier? First, it is one who has volunteered to enter the army. There is no draft today, we have an all volunteer army and I do not know that they had a draft at that time. To be a soldier one must step out and join the army. Salvation in Christ, a soldier in God’s army is there because they volunteered. Christ will not force anyone to be saved, wants all to be saved, died so all could be saved, but will not force anyone to be saved. (2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.) Here we clearly see that God wants all to be saved and all can be saved, but God will not force anyone to be saved. If you have volunteered to be in the army of God, if you are a soldier, what then makes a good one? (2 Tim 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.) Think about that today, more tomorrow.
