Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
KJV
Those are some of the very last words of Jesus before dying on the cross. We make much, as we should of last words. These are the last words of General John Sedgwick a Civil War general killed on the battlefield after being warned by his aid to take cover “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.” Last words are remembered. Jesus prayed for God to offer forgiveness to those who hung Him on that cross. Does anything point more to the love of Jesus, to the mercy, of Jesus, and to the grace of Jesus than those words? It also points to the universal nature of salvation, that all can be saved. If Jesus could offer forgiveness to those who placed Him on that cross then I know His forgiveness is extended to you and me. Praise God for His last words.
