2 Sam 23:1-5
Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,
2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.
5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
KJV
Last words are important words. We make a “Last will and testament” to be read after one dies, our last wishes, our last words, they carry more weight than words said before that at least in our minds. Last words in the Bible do mean something and many examples are there to prove that. The last words of Jesus just before dying on the cross, “It is finished.” Salvations work was done. The last words of Paul just before laying his neck on the chopping block, “I have kept the faith.” A testament to his life after salvation. The last words of David are recorded in our reading this morning and are some of the saddest words in the Bible, why? They are words of regret and remorse. (Verse 5) David, the man after God’s heart, failed the Lord in many different ways and it did break his heart. God forgave David, God restored David, but those failings hurt David. My point? Make sure your last words are not words of regret but words that point to a faithful life in Christ.
