Eph 1:13-15
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
KJV
What is an earnest? It is a guarantee, something that is given to assure payment will be made or something will be completed. When one signs a mortgage with a bank it is an earnest. Many today seem to question salvation in Christ, is it real, is it secure? God has given the Christian an earnest, a guarantee that salvation is real, that it is secure and that earnest is the Holy Spirit of God. When one repents of sin and receives the Lord Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit enters at once, there is no delay, no second blessing, the Holy Spirit indwells us at once and He is our earnest. How do we know we have Him, what evidence is there? The desire to read the Bible, to pray, to be in the house of God, that all comes with the Holy Spirit. That desire to obey God, that disappointment when we fail God, that comes with the Holy Spirit. How do I know I am saved? I have an earnest.
