Luke 10:38-42 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
KJV
It is so easy in this world we live in today to get our eyes off the Lord. Looking at our nations flag being burnt in protest yesterday, listening to our political leaders lie about things we can see, listening while an elected official drops out of a race in favor of one no one voted for, so easy to get distracted from what is important today. Martha, a close friend of Jesus and one who was serving Him was distracted in our text. She was faithfully serving and somehow took her eyes off Jesus and looked at her sister Mary. Mary was not doing as much as Martha, Mary was idle in the eyes of Martha, and for a moment in Martha’s eyes Jesus did not care. We need to be careful not to follow in the footsteps of Martha. Instead of looking around to see who is doing less than us in our eyes, instead of looking at all the things that distract and discourage us, we need to keep our eyes on the prize set before us and continue on for our wonderful Lord. (Phil 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.) Even in light of all that we are seeing today we need to keep pressing on.
