Eph 5:22-24 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
KJV
A hard command to follow for many in a politically correct world is for a wife to submit to the authority and rule of the husband that we see above. The key to such submission is found in the last verse of this chapter. (Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.) What does it mean to reverence someone? The Greek word means to fear and that may seem alarming that a wife should be in fear of her husband but that is not what the Bible is telling us. In the same way one is to reverence the Lord Jesus Christ because one does trust the leading of the Christ one should be able to reverence and trust the husband that he is leading under the direction of the Lord. Notice again that the first part of the verse points to the love a husband is to have for his wife. When this type of live is present in the home, when the wife feels loved and protected, cared for as Christ cares for His church then it will be possible for her to reverence her husband and follow him in the Lord. This does mean of course that one must marry right, marry in the Lord. Too many today marry for all the wrong reasons instead of the one and most important reason. Does the perspective mate love the Lord with all of his or her heart and do they desire to follow and serve the Lord more than anything else? Is Jesus Christ first in their life? When that answer is yes the husband will love his wife as Christ loved the church and the wife will find it possible to submit to and reverence her husband. But only in the Lord.
