May 20th, 2024 by Pastor SolleyMatt 26:10-13 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
KJV
This woman anointed Jesus in preparation for His burial prior to His giving His life on the cross for our sins. While some rebuked her Jesus gave her a place to be remembered for her actions, a place in the eternal Word of God. One week from today is Memorial Day in our nation, a day started to honor those who died in service in the Civil War. Later Memorial Day was expanded to honor all those who died in all of America’s wars, then to all who have served in the military. Today we honor not only those but all loved ones who have passed. For this coming week I want to look back and honor some spiritual heros in my life who may not have served in the military but did serve in God’s army, who did stand on a spiritual battlefield. I begin with my grandfather Beauford. He and my grandmother lived across the street from my boyhood home and they served as babysitters growing up. Pap was disabled due to a terrible car accident and some other health problems and from the time I can remember was always there for me. We spent time together going fishing, hunting, and even playing ball. Pap could not walk without cane or crutches and could not go very far but he made sacrifices for me. As I grew I began to see his spiritual nature. Pap loved the Bible, spent much time in prayer and became a spiritual mentor more than anything else. When I was about fourteen he began to tell me I would be a pastor one day and that long before I ever thought about the ministry. On our first date together I introduced Dena to Pap and later when I saw him he told me “That will be the girl you marry.” Pap did not order either thing but both were ordered by the Lord as Dena and I have been married forty four years and in December I will have been a pastor for forty of those years. Those were just two of many spiritual conversations between Pap and myself and I thank Jesus today for spiritual mentors in my life and making it possible for me to spend so my time with my spiritual grandfather growing up. Pap has been in heaven now for over forty years but I still remember his devotion to the Bible, his prayers, his love for Jesus and yes his love for me.
