Titus 3:8-11 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
KJV
In order to maintain good works we must maintain a right relationship, a right walk with God. We are not talking now about salvation and a need for man to maintain that. Our salvation rests entirely in the hands of Jesus Christ as we could not work to get that free gift of eternal life we cannot work to keep or maintain it. Our walk, our daily relationship with the Lord is another matter, that needs to be maintained. I do find the way I ought to behave myself, the things I ought to do, and that which I need to put out of my life set forth in the Word of God. (1 Thess 4:1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.) My responsibility then is to read and obey God’s Word. I know what the Bible says about right company, about alcohol, about evil things set before my eyes, about what is to come out of my mouth, about every area of life, or at least I can know these things by reading my Bible. Then I must decide if I will obey them or not, if I will choose to walk in the Spirit or in the flesh. Only when I walk in the Spirit, only when I obey, only then can good works be maintained, only then can I be of some profit to man and to God. Even as I write this today I know that God is speaking to me about certain matters, things that need to be addressed in my life. Will I turn those things over to Him, put them away so I can maintain good works before God, or will I ignore the Spirit speaking to me and watch those good works vanish away. Our life is one of a daily decision, will I walk with God today or not? To maintain good works one must walk with the Lord, keep in a right relationship with Him.
